THIS PART OF THE SITE IS DEDICATED TO 607 SQUADRON.

THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL SITE FOR 607 SQUADRON. BASED ON MY RESEARCHES, IT IS A RESUME OF THAT SQUADRON. LIKE THE REST OF THE SITE IT IS BIASED TOWARDS THE MEN WHO MADE UP THE SQUADRON RATHER THAN A HISTORY OF THE SQUADRON.

THE PHOTOGRAPH TO THE LEFT SHOWS NUMBER 607 [COUNTY OF DURHAM] SQUADRON IN 1939. THIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN AT ABBOTSINCH, GLASGOW, AT THE SQUADRON'S SUMMER CAMP OF THAT YEAR.

BADGE OF 607 [COUNTY OF DURHAM] SQUADRON AUXILIARY AIR FORCE. NOTE THAT THE BADGE DOES NOT CARRY A MOTTO. THE PILOTS OF THE SQUADRON WANTED THE WORD 'UP', IT WAS AN IN-JOKE ON THE SQUADRON SAID CO RUNCIMAN. THE HERALDIC OFFICE SAID NO: A SERIES OF LETTERS BETWEEN RUNCIMAN AND THE HERALDIC OFFICE ENDED WHEN RUNCIMAN DECIDED: 'IF WE CAN'T HAVE 'UP' THEN WE WILL HAVE NOTHING'. THE FIGHTER COMMAND SPEARHEAD, CARRIED ON THE TAILS OF THE DEMONS WAS ALWAYS PAINTED IN THE 'UP' POSITION. 607 SQUADRON WAS THE ONLY SQUADRON IN FIGHTER COMMAND TO HAVE IT PAINTED IN THIS FASHION.
